Weather modification, commonly called cloud seeding, is the practice through which selected clouds are treated with a well-timed placement of a specific material to accelerate the development of precipitation.

Who invented Cloud Seeding?
Weather modification operations have been active and on-going since the 1960's. Research and experiments began long before that, as early as the 1930's.
An American chemist and meteorologist named Vincent Joseph Schaefer (1906 - 1993) developed cloud seeding. In 1946, in experiments carried out by General Electric Research Laboratory, Schaefer modified clouds in the Berkshire Mountains by seeding them with dry ice.

Purpose of cloud seeding operations:
1) Increase precipitation in areas experiencing drought
2) To reduce the size of hailstones that form in thunderstorms
3) To reduce the amount of fog in and around airports
4) Also used by major ski resorts to induce snowfall
5) Military applications
Currently, over a dozen areas across the United States and Canada have ongoing weather modification operational programs.
